What is poppy seed oil and what does it contain?

Poppy seed oil is made by cold pressing the seeds of the opium poppy (a special low morphine variety that does not contain morphine – although cultivation of this poppy for food purposes is also regulated by law and requires special permission). Due to this, it contains unsaturated fatty acids (mainly linoleic and oleic), which have a beneficial effect on our body.

Poppy seed oil is colorless to pale yellow in color and has a slightly sweet, nutty flavor. Store in a cool, dark place. You can find it mainly in health food stores. The cost of 250 ml is up to 400 hryvnias.

Using poppy seed oil

Poppy oil should be included in your daily diet. It goes well with vegetable salads, as well as with meat and fish dishes (however, it cannot be heat treated – it loses most of its valuable properties), it will be an ideal addition to homemade sauces. Its nutty note will also enhance the flavor of some desserts. However, the daily dose should not exceed two tablespoons of oil.

The oil is also especially recommended for topical use on dry skin and damaged, dull hair. A few drops should be distributed over the entire length of the hair, and after 45 minutes, wash off with shampoo as usual. Poppy oil applied to the skin should be mixed with other ingredients (for example, natural yogurt) so that its concentration does not exceed 10%.
