The liver is the largest and one of the most important organs in our body. It ensures that the body functions properly by doing a lot of work every day. It performs over 500 different functions, incl. cleanses the body of toxins and harmful metabolic products, metabolizes nutrients and promotes the absorption of vitamins. The liver has the ability to fully repair itself, but it is very easy to overload it. This, in turn, affects the deterioration of the state of the whole organism.

This is an organ that does not hurt, so the first symptoms of its load may be underestimated. Therefore, it is worth regularly cleaning it of accumulated toxins to ensure its smooth operation. Diet should play a key role in cleansing and regenerating the liver,

What affects liver overload?

The liver performs many key functions in the body, most of all it is involved in digestion processes. It is responsible for the production of bile, metabolizes fats, carbohydrates and other nutrients, and assists in the absorption of vitamins. This organ neutralizes and removes harmful toxins and heavy metals from the body.

The liver can tolerate a lot and fully recover, but bad habits can overload it and make it impossible for it to work effectively. The liver suffers from particularly unhealthy lifestyles, including the use of most alcohol and other stimulants such as cigarettes, as well as highly processed foods and foods high in fat (especially spenders). The organ is also not served by long-term medication and nutritional deficiencies.

The liver is a poorly innervated organ and therefore does not cause pain. However, when overloaded, it increases, presses on adjacent organs and causes abdominal discomfort and digestion. Symptoms of liver dysfunction may include recurrent abdominal pain and enlargement, discoloration of urine and blood in the stool, and chronic fatigue. Edema, itchy skin, unexplained weight gain, jaundice, and hormonal disorders such as irregular menstruation or decreased libido may also indicate liver burden.

What should be excluded?

If the symptoms described above appear, check the condition of the liver as soon as possible and support its regeneration. However, organ cleansing takes 8 weeks, so be patient. The first step is to completely abandon foods that burden this organ, and therefore, above all, from alcohol and smoking. You should also consult with your doctor, who will determine if you can continue taking recently taken medications. It’s also important to change your diet to eliminate highly processed foods, prepared meals, sweets, and spender-rich foods. Also avoid coffee and strong tea, red meat, mushrooms, wheat bread, and dairy products (margarine, cheese, cream, yogurt, or eggs).

Changing eating habits

In case of liver disorders and diseases, certain dietary rules should be followed, which should be adapted to the individual needs of the patient. The key question is to change the frequency of meals. They should be eaten regularly 5–6 times a day in smaller portions, and not, for example, three times a day. They should also be easily digestible, with minimal processing and minimal fat content.

An important rule is to give up frying in favor of boiling in water or steam, stewing or baking in foil. Dishes should be fresh, not heated. It is also worth taking care of a sufficient amount of protein, which speeds up the regeneration process. So, make your diet rich in lean meats and fish.

What foods will support liver regeneration?

A diet that supports the liver regeneration process should, above all, be rich in plant foods. Therefore, every meal should include a serving of vegetables or fruits. Green leafy vegetables like lettuce, spinach, kale and arugula are beneficial to liver function. They contain a large amount of chlorophyll, which neutralizes toxins and helps the liver to purify the blood.

The liver diet should also include artichoke, which stimulates the secretion of bile and lowers cholesterol, and beetroot – it supports blood filtration and cleanses the body of harmful metabolic products. Also, worth eating are garlic, avocado and citrus fruits (grapefruit, lemons). These foods activate enzymes that help cleanse and repair the liver. You can juice vegetables and fruits, and use the juice to flush toxins from the body. You should then drink the juice on an empty stomach for two weeks or three servings a day. The course of treatment can be repeated every three months.
