What is Xerostomia?

Xerostomia, commonly known as dry mouth, is a condition in which saliva is retained from the mouth. As a result, it causes discomfort, often physically and mentally, as it makes it difficult to eat, talk and digest food. Moreover, suffering from xerostomia, the patient practically does not feel taste sensations.

Symptoms

Xerostomia is manifested by dry mouth, tongue and mouth. The main symptoms are also associated with inflammation in the mouth and around the lips. This is an unpleasant and very troublesome disease.

Causes of dry mouth

The causes of xerostomia can be different. However, the most commonly cited group includes:

  • stress;
  • excessive smoking of cigarettes;
  • a large amount of salt in the diet;
  • long-term use of potent drugs.

Treatment of dry mouth is based primarily on moisturizing the mouth and applying appropriate hygiene measures. Antibiotics are not recommended because they can irritate the mucous membranes, exacerbating symptoms. People with dry mouth should also take care of the correct balance of calcium and phosphorus in the mouth. Plant-based preparations are perfect. They are usually tender and highly nutritious. They also help maintain the correct pH in the mouth.

If you have dry mouth, remember to regularly supply water to your body. The minimum amount is eight glasses a day. Adequate hydration and hydration of the body can prevent relapse.

Lack of treatment for xerostomia leads to very dangerous consequences. Due to the long absence of saliva in the mouth, tooth decay or mycosis in the mouth can develop.
