For most of us, cotton is a plant that provides raw materials for the production of many types of fabrics. It turns out that it can also be used in various sectors of the economy: for the production of paper, dressings, or as animal feed. The oil can be cold pressed from cotton seeds, which after processing is used in the food industry. On the other hand, unrefined can be considered a natural cosmetic product. The active substances contained in it improve the condition of the skin and also have a beneficial effect on the hair structure. Although cottonseed oil is little known in Ukraine, its properties make it more popular.

What you need to know about cottonseed oil?

Cottonseed oil is derived from Indian cotton grown in Africa and Asia for industrial purposes. It is believed to be produced as a by-product in the production of cotton thread, but the tradition of obtaining it goes back several thousand years. Cottonseed oil is obtained in the so-called cold pressing process: light yellow in color, without a characteristic odor. Interestingly, its physical properties do not change when exposed to high temperatures. Although this substance is not very popular in Ukraine, it is used in cooking in many countries around the world. It is added to salads, fried in a variety of dishes and used in the food industry. In addition, cottonseed oil is also used as a conditioning agent.

What can be found in cottonseed oil?

Cottonseed oil is rich in many active substances. It is a source of many unsaturated fatty acids, which can be as high as 75 percent. Among them, linoleic and oleic acids, which are commonly used in skin care, deserve special attention. In addition, cotton seed oil is a source of tocopherol (classified as powerful antioxidants). These substances quickly neutralize toxins, slow down the aging process of body cells, and can reduce the risk of dangerous diseases of civilization. Cottonseed oil also contains vitamin E (known as the “youth vitamin”), which protects the skin from excessive UV radiation, stimulates cell regeneration and improves skin elasticity and tone.

The dark side of cottonseed oil

The substances in cottonseed oil seem to be very beneficial to health. You need to know that it contains a chemical compound from the group of phenols – gossypol. Present in the plant, it acts as a pest control. This ratio is often used in the industry for the production of insecticides. Unfortunately, this substance is classified as a toxin and cannot be consumed by humans. Therefore, only refined cottonseed oil should be used in food, which does not contain gossypol. On the other hand, unrefined oil can be safely used in cosmetics.

Benefits of using cottonseed oil

Cottonseed oil is used in daily skin and hair care. This will especially help improve the condition of damaged and split ends. It is also recommended using it when the strands are dry. Regular use of the product moisturizes and strengthens the strands. Cottonseed oil can also be rubbed into the scalp. This treatment makes them less prone to hair loss and prevents the formation of dandruff and oily hair.
