Frostbite is red, painful swelling of the fingers, toes, nose, and ears in areas most prone to freezing. They are caused by narrowing of the blood vessels under the skin. Frostbite is a seasonal ailment, especially in winter. They disappear after 2–3 weeks without treatment. The following home remedies will help reduce itching and swelling and provide relief.

Lemon juice for frostbite

Lemon juice has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that can help you cope with frostbite. Slice the lemon into thick wedges, or squeeze the lemon juice and rub it into the frostbitten areas. Treat 2–3 times a day for quick relief. Don’t use lemon juice if you have chapped skin. It will be hell.

Calendula and aloe for frostbite

If your skin is cracked, calendula is the best home remedy for frostbite. Calendula has anti-inflammatory properties and speeds up healing.
Crush a handful of calendula flowers. Add a few drops of warm water for a thick paste. Add an equal part of aloe Vera gels to the paste and mix thoroughly. I spread it on the place of frostbite.

Onion juice has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic properties and is one of the oldest remedies for frostbite. The juice reduces swelling, itching and pain.

Juice the finely chopped onion. Rub the juice with a cotton pad into the frostbite area. Leave on for 10–15 minutes. After this time, rinse with warm water. Make sure you don’t apply onion juice to chapped skin.

Cayenne pepper for frostbite

Cayenne pepper is very effective in treating frostbite. The capsaicin in the pepper relieves pain. Use a cotton ball to apply the pepper to the frostbite. If your skin is cracked, do not use this method.

Potato juice for frostbite

Potato juice has medicinal properties, relieves swelling and itching at the site of frostbite. Cut the potatoes into thick slices, or squeeze out the potato juice. Rub in juice or grate a piece of potato to prevent frostbite. The juice can be applied to chapped skin.
